Giving myself some "Me" time

When you run your own business it is amazing how many different tasks can take up your day. There is a never ending list of orders to fill, packages to ship, supplies to buy, emails and convos to answer, suppliers to call, marketing, promotional and networking work to do that we rarely find enough hours in the day. It is easy to let certain things in our life take 2nd place. The things that lose out can be anything from your social life to remembering to clean the house. Although personally I know I should clean, I just don't want to!

There are several things that I continuously fight to keep in balance, but something I noticed I am not doing enough of is giving myself some creative "me" time to just explore new ideas and dream for a bit. I know that it is essential to enjoy what I do to keep my passion for The House of Mouse going. But somehow over the last few months I have let the orders and everyday chores completely take over so when I am in the studio I am only making the "old favourites" from my store and a few custom orders when they come in.

Yesterday I gave myself some time to create and just enjoy the process again, and oh how I needed it! It has really sparked my interest and fascination with sewing all over again. I have several new mice that I am going to make over today and possibly tomorrow too. I can't wait to show you my new designs!

To any sellers out there who let their other chores take over, I say reserve some time just for you with no interruptions or detractions, and make something just for yourself. You won't regret it and you will probably be rewarded with a whole load of new ideas and excitement over what you do.

Artist Interview - Reclaim2Fame

Whilst collecting photos for a feature on my other blog For the Love of Cute, I stumbled across a store that made me chuckle. The more I looked through Wills store Reclaim2Fame the more the chuckle became a giggle, which multiplied until I was laughing out loud. I love Wills creations, their fun names and his wonderful descriptions. I had to know more about Will and his art, his interview makes me smile as much as his shop does.

PROFESSOR PORTLY
The Endlessly Curious Seeker Of Wisdom And Truth

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location etc.)
William Wagenaar [call me Will]
Port Richey, Florida USA

Other than crafting what else do you do?
I am a student of Metaphysics and the creative process [perhaps they are the same thing]
I ride my bicycle and garden.

Have you always been an artist?
Always, I suspect in other lives as well but have no proof of that.

BELLE dress form sculpture

Tell us a bit about your creative process
I listen to the thoughts that precede the making of things.
Those thoughts often lead me to the objects needed to create something.
Nothing has ever fallen from the sky, still, 'miracles' have happened.
If I choose not to listen, my process becomes more difficult because I have not collected all that I need.
The collection process [salvaging and scavenging] takes a good deal of time and commitment.
If I force this process, it's a waste of time and money.
When I have it in my hands, I know that I need it. It is only a matter of time till I know why I need it.
But with one more piece of the puzzle, the image becomes more clear.

I try to see things anew, that takes practice. Sometimes I turn them upside down or sideways.
Turning things upside down in a thrift store or at the flea market can get strange looks and sometimes, well intended yet unhelpful corrections.
I have in my hands a nuclear ray gun. I stare at it in awe of its power and possibilities...
and then a kind voice will inform me: "it's a bicycle pump". "Oh, of course, Thanks"

Once I feel that I have most of what I need, I play and try not to limit my possibilities.
If I can get two or three pieces of anything to make sense together, the rest of the project usually unfolds easily.
It is about getting that first spark. Placing enough things together in different positions and things start to click.
If there is no click or spark, I put them down. They are not the right things or it is not the right day for those things.

POPS
The High Mileage / Low Maintenance Geriatric Steampunk Robot

I often ask a thing what it can be or wants to be... yes, I do! It is a playful technique.
The molecules of all matter spin at a high rate of speed, there is no such thing as an inanimate object.
An extraordinary intelligence holds it together, why would I not talk to that intelligence?
Then I listen for an answer, sometimes the answer is immediate, sometimes not.

Are you self taught?
I have a degree in commercial interior design from Harrington Institute in Chicago.
It was an excellent program, I was a voracious student.
Nature has also been my teacher. The laws of its beauty can be observed and applied.

Which of your creations is your favourite?
Sparky changed my life forever, I won't go backwards.

Artist Interview - Chiara from Milk

I want to introduce you all to some amazing art I found last week. I discovered Chiara's breathtaking illustrations and after looking through her beautiful myspace page I found myself wanting to know more about her and her work. She inspired me to ask her to do an interview for my blog. I hope you will enjoy learning more about her too.

Tell us a bit about yourself
Chiara Bautista, Mexican, petite.

Other than creating art, what else do you do?
I'm a graphic designer & illustrator. I work for a daily newspaper in Tucson, Arizona. it's just like love: beautiful and stressful job.

Have you always been an artist?
To be honest, I don't think of myself as an artist, "illustrator" fits me better... but yes, I've always liked to draw and paint, since I was a little girl.

Tell us a bit about your creative process.
I always start with something I need to say, usually a feeling I can't put into words, and that's why I have to use images. I never sketch a final version of an illustration because I always end changing almost everything. My work process is messy and I go back and forth, changing stuff constantly while I'm working. It's like... when you're writing an email to an ex-boyfriend, and you have to go back and read again that last paragraph, and after reading it a couple of times you change something here and there because you don't want him to misunderstand your words. Yes, it's just like that.
My [messy] work process includes: pencil & paper, a basic sketch of the main layer, scanner, computer, a vector program (Freehand Mx/Adobe Illustrator), and Adobe Photoshop.

Music appears to be play a very important roll in your art, do you listen to music while you work? What other influences does music have on your creative process?
I always listen to music while I'm working. I love music. I include songs in my illustrations because we tend to attach experiences to the song that was playing at the moment, you listen to a song and somehow the melody brings back a lot of memories & feelings. That's why I can't listen to certain songs anymore, and some others are playing in a loop on my stereo.

There is always so much to see in each of your pieces and yet they never seem cluttered. Is it a concious effort to get this balance each time?
mmm... I wouldn't know... but I can say that I like balance... I guess that's why I'm always moving stuff around while I'm working.

Are any of your illustrations for sale? If yes, where can we buy them?
At the moment I don't have any prints or originals left for sale, but I'll have some more soon and I'll be selling them through my website www.logyumilk.com

Where can we find you online?
...for sentimental reasons, I only post my images on my myspace page.

ArtMind is feeling creative

Creative

Over the last few months I have watched in awe as my friend Mitsy set about creating a unique collection of 99 ceramic babushka dolls, each representing a different emotion. Mitsy has kept me glued to her blog with updates and beautiful photos of each and every one of her feelings as she made them. You can see the whole collection in one place on in her flicker page.

The sensitivity and humor that has gone into these feelings is so wonderful, they really do make you feel as you look at them. I am a firm believer that the simplest ideas are the best, Mitsy took a simple babushka doll shape and transformed each into a feeling with the use of texture and wonderful craftsmanship.

The instant her dolls were fired and in her store ArtMind.etsy.com I bought one. I have loved "creativity" since I first saw her and am absolutely thrilled to own the first one of this style she ever made - it even has the number 1 stamped on its base!

I leave you to enjoy some of my favorites from

Exhibition in a weird place

You may not know this, but as well as making felt mice I also paint. I have been painting professionaly for about 5 years but have never managed to sell many of my works. I had several exhibitions in Amsterdam, in the Jordaan - the art center of the city - and never made a sale there. I gave up on exhibiting in Amsterdam as each one cost me money in rent for the wall space and came with nothing but disappointment.

I bought a car recently, and the salesman Googled me after asking what I did for a living. He found my art and loved it. A few days later his manager rang me up and suggested I show my work in their car showroom! What a strange place to show I thought, but they want no commission or rent for the space, and as an artist you have to take what the universe thows at you, whatever it may be!

Yesterday I set up 10 of my paintings and have to say I happy with how it looks. They gave me a very prominant spot in their showroom, right at the front, and they have done several press releases to the local newspapers! Maybe this time I will sell something, but if I don't it won't have cost me.
